STEP 1: Read the character description and the entire script
Character Description:
JANESSA is a happy go lucky gal who is dating Richard. She has been dying to introduce him to authentic Italian food after her trip to Italy.
RICHARD is a sweet but foolish guy that lets his emotions get the best of him. He is dating Janessa and asks her on a date that he methodically planned, to talk to her about something really important.

INT. DAY – JANESSA’S CONDO DOORWAY.
JANESSA Opens the door and grabs her purse.
JANESSA
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Slow (Excited.)
Okay!
RICHARD points to his outfit asking if he is dressed alright.
RICHARD
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Slow (Unsure)
Okay?
JANESSA gives Richard a thumbs up in approval.
JANESSA
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow (Endearing)
Okay.
RICHARD looks at his watch and points to the door.
RICHARD
Poking – Light, Direct, Quick
Okay?
JANESSA nods her head.
JANESSA
Poking – Light, Direct, Quick (Agreeable)
Okay.
RICHARD throws his arm in the air in excitement.
RICHARD
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Slow (Excited)
OK!
INT. DAY – ITALIAN RESTAURANT
JANESSA Reads the menu effortlessly in Italian.
JANESSA
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Sustained
Okay.
RICHARD squints eyes at the difficult Italian words.
RICHARD
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Sustained
Okay
JANESSA points happily to an item on the menu. She is ready to order.
JANESSA
Squashing – Strong, Direct – Sustained
O.K.
RICHARD Sweating and failing to find anything he can read on the menu, he gets annoyed that he didn’t get to order for the both of them.
RICHARD
Squeezing – Strong, Indirect, Slow
(Annoyed)
Okay.
JANESSA Looks around the restaurant in disbelief and slight annoyance at Richard for getting mad about nothing.
JANESSA
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Slow (Surprised.)
Uh Okay!
RICHARD Crosses his arms.
RICHARD
Flittering – Light, Indirect, Quick (Still annoyed)
Okay.
JANESSA boils with anger, but holds it in.
JANESSA
Squeezing – Strong, Indirect, Sustained (Boiling with anger)
(sigh)Okay.
RICHARD Reaches his hand over to touch her hand.
RICHARD
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow
Okay?
JANESSA’s spoon drops and she reaches for it. She doesn’t see Richard trying to touch her hand.
JANESSA
Flittering – Light, Indirect, Quick (Mad and fine.)
Okay.
RICHARD misunderstands missing Janessa’s hand and doesn’t see the spoon. He thinks she is ungrateful for going on the date.
RICHARD
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Slow
Okay.
JANESSA’s eyes get big and she shakes her head.
JANESSA
Slashing – Strong, Indirect, Quick
Okay.
RICHARD throws his hands up and makes a mocking face.
RICHARD
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Slow (Mocking)
Okay!
JANESSA laughs in disbelief at Richard’s behavior.
JANESSA
Flittering – Light, Indirect, Quick (Baffled)
(baffled laugh) Okay!
BOTH RICHARD AND JANESSA
Goring – Strong, Direct, Quick (Angry)
Okayyyy!!
JANESSA begins to cry softly for a brief moment.
JANESSA
Flittering – Light, Indirect, Quick (softly)
(crying) Okay.
RICHARD speaks first to himself, trying to figure out a solution.
RICHARD
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Slow (worried)
Okay …
Flittering – Light, Indirect, Quick
Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.
(beat)
RICHARD speaks to Janessa.
RICHARD continued
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow
Okay?
JANESSA calms herself down from crying.
JANESSA
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Slow
(sigh) Okay.
JANESSA looks at Richard and attempts to reset the date by starting over.
JANESSA continued
Poking – Light, Direct, Quick
Okay.
RICHARD Pulls out a ring to show to Janessa to see if she likes the style he picked out. He is asking for her approval.
RICHARD
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Slow
Okay?
JANESSA’s eyes light up and she lets him know that she approves of the ring he got.
JANESSA
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow (Shocked)
Okay.
RICHARD puts on a big smile.
RICHARD
Poking – Light, Direct, Quick
Okay.
RICHARD takes her by the hand to stand Janessa up on her feet.
JANESSA tries to shake off her nerves and speaks to herself.
JANESSA
Flowing – Light, Indirect, Sustained (Anticipation)
Okay.
RICHARD asks Janessa to marry him.
RICHARD
Squashing – Strong, Direct, Slow
Okay?
JANESSA softly smiles with a twinkle in her eye and response softly to Richard.
JANESSA
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow
Okay.
RICHARD leans in to give JANESSA a kiss.
RICHARD
Sliding – Light, Direct, Slow
(Kiss) Okay.
The RESTARUANT PATRONS lean in as they didn’t hear her response.
JANESSA yells her response louder to let the patrons know her response. She holds up the ring.
JANESSA
Goring – Strong, Direct, Quick
Okayyy!!!
JANESSA begins to fix her mascara. She speaks to herself..
JANESSA continued
